I would like to thank everyone who voted for me in the General Election in Maldon, as well as the Labour activists who provided so much help to me in the last few months.
While clearly disappointed not to win, I enjoyed the contest with candidates from the Conservatives, Ukip and the Lib Dems.
It was a pleasure to fight a seat in Essex, the county where I grew up. I found Maldon folk to be polite, friendly and interested in how to tackle the problems facing our country, such as child poverty, the demand for food banks, and the performance of the NHS.
I would like also to thank the three churches which hosted hustings events: St Mary's Church in Burnham, Holy Trinity Church, in South Woodham Ferrers and the United Reformed Church in Maldon.
And, of course, I would like to congratulate the election winner, John Whittingdale MP.
